The only real difference is the port selection/wattages. As above, the TS3 will have the same bandwidth between the dock and your laptop as the TS4 and will perform identically in that manner. I tried using a Ivanky dock and 2 Samsung 24in Curve monitors but only getting one display to work. The TS3 still has a great port selection, great speeds, and good amount of charging wattage for many devices. There are reddit posts about it from months ago. If those things don't matter to you, the TS3 will be just fine. There are some other differences, but are minor IMO. Both will have the same bandwidth (40Gbps) between the dock and your M1 Pro MacBook however, so performance won't be any different simply because of the version of Thunderbolt being used.įrom my look at these two docks, the CalDigit TS4 has: So don't get the Thunderbolt 4 dock purely because "4 > 3." Do get the TB4 dock if you like the port selection and specs. This dock has the mostand the most usefulports, including USB-A and USB-C ports and an SD card slot. The changes between 3 and 4 only really affect the cables (have to support USB 3.2 Gen 2 on all cables to be Thunderbolt 4) and the host devices (have to support all the optional features of TB3 to be called TB4). The changes between the two versions don't really affect the docks (TB4 can have multiple downstream TB ports, but otherwise the docks are the same from a performance standpoint). Thunderbolt 4 is basically Thunderbolt 3.
